What are U-values and why do I need to consider them when choosing sliding doors?

Thermal performance is the term the construction industry uses to describe the degree to which a building retains heat. This performance is measured by something called the U-value. Put simply, the lower the U-value, the greater the insulation properties of a material.

When we apply this to glazing units, the overall U-value is calculated by combining the centre panel U-value (the glass) and the aluminium frame U-value. A low overall U-value represents high levels of thermal performance and energy efficiency. This score lies significantly below the current Building Regulation minimum of 1.6.
